1st May 2012 we attended the PMC Meeting at Balgandharva and noted new machines for composting, shredding. Also got the PMC garbage policy and began distributing the same through Facebook and mails and photocopies.
16th May saw the flattening of speed breakers on Bhandarkar Road and Kale Path. Our members met Mr. Shende and others at the Ward Office to enquire into the condition of speed breakers. After this a walk was arranged on 18th May with Engineer Mr. Shende at Law College Road, explaining the various impediments to footpaths and other problems. Our members also met Mrs. Munshettiwar at the MSEDCL office and then gave her a list of the problems we can see regarding cables, and other electrical obstructions. On 16th June, some work could be seen on Law College Road with regard to the complaints made last month.
31st May Ward office monthly meeting
Swach and PMC have almost finalized a plan which will aim for full coverage of door to door garbage pick up. Bhagat Singh Briigade will also be covering certain parts of the ward.
Div SI Karkud is working on a map which shows all the houses/societies in our ward along with the containers and feeder points. We were shown a copy of this map. It’s yet to be completed but still impressive.
Swach and PMC sanitation dept will be meeting next week to chart out the coverage according to this map. Places for sorting sheds will also be identified.
We have asked for better coordination between PMC and Swach – for eg the timing of the Swach rag pickers should coincide with the truck feeder point timings so that they do not have wait for hours and ultimately dump the unwanted stuff in the containers.
Letters handed in:
- Request for composting pit at Kamala Nehru Park – to compost the garden waste generated in the park and the surrounding lanes.
- Request for paving of the 2 small bylanes near KNP back gate currently used as mini garbage dumps. The DGPS has got this area cleaned up but sprucing it up with tiles and a few plants might discourage further dumping in the future.
- Repairs of road dividers – different places in our prabhag which need this urgently identified
- Request for re-starting the BORI signal so that senior citizens (and others) can cross Law College Road safely
- Request for rumbler strips at some parts of the Prabhaag which are accident prone.
31st May: DCP Traffic Pandhare met residents of Deccan-Karve Road etc. at Kohinoor Mangal Karyalaya at a public meeting.
DGPS members handed over letters regarding fatalities in our area due to speeding vehicles, need to enforce traffic discipline, and other points for speed control and traffic safety on Law College Road
1st June: Fire at garbage container and nallah opposite Bank of Maharashtra at night. We sent a mail to the Commissioner and Mr. Suresh Jagtap about the fire hazard caused by garden waste. The next day, photos were also sent to them and we visited the Deccan Gymkhana Police Station to ascertain more details of general fires.
10th June Monthly meeting:
Garbage update from the Ward Office meeting
Lane 11 has a new goal of the container going in two weeks, with door to door collection starting in the next 10 days – we will watch and see the progress on this one carefully!
With one KNP bylane much cleared up, we need to get boards up in various spots around Deccan where people throw garbage. For Lane 7 we feel that if people get onto the Ward Office asking repeatedly for door to door collection of garbage and removal of the container from Pawar Bangla, the road can be quite cleaned up – this may take some time but we do need to push for that.
Apart from these meetings, we have been regularly following up on the situation in various garbage containers, the ghantaagaadi route etc.
Stray Dog Sterilisation: 12 dogs have been sterilised in May – near FTII-Athavale Chowk and Karve Road – through volunteers and Blue Cross. 30 more dogs have been identified for sterilisation. We got contributions for 18 more dogs.
Traffic Jammers: Throughout the month of May, the order for 26 jammers were followed up at the fabricator, the design was modified in consultation with PTP. Funds for the jammers have been collected through voluntary contributions from members. Jammers will be handed over on 19th June 2012 to DCP Traffic Vishwas Pandhare at Patrakar Bhavan at 4pm.
